The Soap Dragon

This year I will be releasing 2 soap designs each month, each batch will be around 10-20 bars and will all be previewed on Instagram/Twitter/Facebook so make sure you're following me somewhere to keep yourselves up to date. You can pre-order from the preview date, but once they're gone I will not be making more batches of these designs this year.

Bar prices range from £3-4, depending on ingredients and processes. Alternatively, buy 4 bars for £10.

Alternatively, if you would rather have a few smaller bars, I am now selling scrap soaps. These are usually the end pieces of the loaf, ugly/failed designs or leftover batter. There is nothing technically wrong with these smaller bars, they are a necessary part of the soapmaking process, just not as pretty. For the minimal price of £4, I will randomly pick out a selection of the equivalent weight of 2 full bars (Around 300g). Contact me directly, or follow this link for the Ebay post.

20% DISCOUNT FOR KEY WORKERS

If you would like to order a specific soap, I am happy to discuss options - please bear in mind that soap, on average, requires 6-8 weeks of curing time so I will need at least 2 month's time before delivery.

Bitmap sketches below are just an indication of design ideas.

Snowy Morning

See Design Book Video Here

This Snowy Morning Soap recipe was the first design I made, back in 2018 when I was just learning the craft so I thought it would be a good idea to try and improve on it. This bastille recipe uses 80% olive oil to create a gentle soap in a simple design with a stencilled snowflake decoration.

These come in either circular or rectangular bars, choose one or the other or I'll make a random selection.

Nest Egg

See Design Book Video Here

I have seen a number of gender reveal soaps around, most have a coloured block running through the centre so the surprise is ruined by simply opening the packet. For this design the prospective parents can either use the bar for a few days to reveal the colour within the egg, or - if they don't have the patience - cut into the shell to see either blue or pink inside.

These come in either pink or blue, obviously. I have made gender reveal teddys in the past when prospective parents have asked their sonographer to put the gender details in an envelope so that they can hand it to a trusted individual who then Emailed me... something similar could be done to maintain the surprise of these fabulous little soaps.

Rose Petals

Every soapmaker seems to have a rose bar in their collection, and this design includes two fabulously bold techniques; a drop-swirl and soap dough flowers. The rose fragrance is pleasantly floral without being overpowering, although in future batches I will be using some rosewater alongside non-dairy milk for a more rounded finish that is fully vegan. I have since purchased a rose mould, but I like the handmade flowers and will be really packing them in next time to cover the whole of the top with occasional green leaves to provide contrast.

28th Feb - Chamomile and Chai

I have been dabbling with polymer clay throughout Lockdown and decided to try and see if I can use some of the flower cane techniques with soap dough - this was almost a success, except that the cane drifted off-centre in the mould. This is a lovely floral fragrance, tempered with the spicier tones of chai tea.

1st Mar - High Tea

This design was one of my original soaps back when I started soapmaking - that time I had serious issues with acceleration in the bowl and things became a little frantic towards the end. (The video link below is for the original batch, as I didn't record this one) This time I used a Milk base and things went so much smoother!

31st Mar - Just Daffs

When I found a good recipe for soap dough this was one of the first soaps I designed, utilizing natural oxide colours in bold layers to contrast the fabulous flowers (although my sculpting skills need a bit more work). I used a fork to create texture between the layers that somewhat resembles the reaching fingers of spring plants pushing up through the layers of the earth. I had originally planned to cut the bars much smaller, giving each one half a flower, but when it came to it I just couldn't cut them down... so these bars are HUGE!

1st Apr - Not Terry's

I have always loved chocolate and orange flavours, and I didn't want to take too much from the richness of the scent by excess design detail, so most of this bar is coloured with cocoa powder, with a splash of orange and some orange segments of soap dough. I attempted to create a cane, the way that I would usually use polymer clay, and it was successful, but I have learned that this soap dough isn't as stretchable, but it holds its shape really well.

30th Apr - It's Not Battenberg

Battenberg is my favourite cake - mainly for the marzipan - but I saw other soapers making this design and I thought, there must be an easier way... the answer is, yes, and no! Check the video for details. This soap's resemblance to cake is a problem, if you're likely to only trust the evidence of your eyes - it does not smell or feel like cake, so I think that the risk of someone eating it is slim, unless you like soap!

Following on from the Battenberg design, I decided to try and see how much of a chequerboard I could create in soap. This was so much more difficult, obviously, but I really like the way it turned out.
